Job Description

About The Broad Institute:

The Broad Institute is an amazing place - we apply our deep knowledge of human genetics to empower a revolution in biomedicine and accelerate the pace at which the world conquers disease. Through our partnerships with MIT, Harvard, and the Harvard teaching hospitals, we've become a worldwide hub of cutting-edge biomedical science.

About the Lab:
The Klarman Cell Observatory (KCO) seeks a Postdoctoral Associate to lead large-scale, multidisciplinary projects which which build upon our research using advanced single-cell genomic technology. The KCO and Xavier lab have long been centers of expertise in single-cell analysis technology development and the application of such technology to better understand human physiology and disease processes. Currently we are advancing the limits of throughput, data quality, and enabling new types of measurements that are ripe for advancing different areas of disease biology. Dr. Xavier is a Core Institute Member of the Broad Institute, Director of the Klarman Cell observatory and Director of the Immunology Program.

About the Position:

We are seeking creative and highly-motivated postdoctoral fellows to lead large-scale, multidisciplinary projects with the broad goal of understanding human tissue function and dysfunction at sub-single cell resolution. Our current work merges the Klarman Cell Observatory's historical strengths in single cell sequencing and technology development with the Xavier lab's expertise in organ biology, immunology, and human genetics. We aim to identify mechanisms that define health and disease in human tissues using data-driven, state-of-the-art experimental and computational methods. Recent work that exemplifies our scientific approach includes: development of technology to profile the enteric nervous system of mice and humans at single-cell resolution (PMID 32888429), a single-cell and spatial atlas of COVID-19 affected lung, heart, kidney, and liver tissues (PMID 33915569), and a novel, computational framework to identify coordinated cellular programs linked to higher-order tissue functions (PMID 35513526).

Potential projects, to be refined with the candidate' s input, include:

  • Developing new spatial -omics technologies that can be applied to human patient samples

  • Identifying molecular mechanisms of tissue homeostasis and understanding their dysfunction in cancer or inflammatory disease

  • Creating new computational approaches to identify activity modules within tissues that produce function at multiple scales, from biochemical through networks of single cells, to tissue and organ

Successful candidates will have a strong quantitative, multidisciplinary background. They will be eager to generate and/or interrogate large biological datasets with the goal of identifying molecular mechanisms that drive clinically relevant phenotypes. Domain expertise in cell or human physiology, single-cell genomics, computational biology, or bioengineering is a plus. Candidates must also be self-motivated, with a strong track record developing independent projects, and also collaborative, with an equally strong track record of good scientific and lab citizenship. Postdoctoral fellows will be provided with excellent training opportunities from the KCO and the wider Broad Institute community.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualified candidates should have:

  • Ph.D. in cell biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or biochemistry or related
  • Proven ability in molecular biology
  • Computational experience in analysis and interpretation of single-cell data
  • Experience in next generation sequencing workflow and analysis
  • Strong publication record and excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Demonstrated success in working on complex, novel research problems.
