Job Details:

I. GENERAL SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Medical Director of the Microbiology Section, this position is directly responsible for the technical and administrative management of the Microbiology Section of the department and its staff. The Manager will provide effective leadership and efficient operation in compliance with departmental and institutional goals, coordinate, supervise and manage the activities of the section to ensure that high quality laboratory services and testing are provided to patients in a timely and cost effective manner. Keeps the Medical Director informed of all necessary information and consults with the Medical Director on changes to services provided by the section. The Manager handles personnel issues, maintains personnel records, writes job descriptions and maintains payroll. The Manager is responsible for oversight of all clinical activities including section quality assurance, quality control, equipment maintenance, and regulatory compliance. In Collaboration with the Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the Manager develops the annual departmental budget, prepares and presents the capital equipment requests, monitors supply and payroll budgets. The Manager writes, implements and maintains the section procedure manuals for the each area of responsibility, initiates and implements new policies and procedures. The manager is responsible for meeting regulatory requirements to maintain accreditation by CAP and The Joint Commission. Provides training in Microbiology and medical laboratory science to fellows, residents, interns and medical technology students.

II. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Hires, supervises, trains, evaluates, disciplines, and with approval, discharges Microbiology staff. (Technical and non-technical)
  • Creates staffing schedules, work rotations, on call schedules and holiday coverage to provide adequate 24-hour service seven days per week.
  • Develops, with the Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the section annual budget with recommendations, staffing and supply needs.
  • Assure proper maintenance of laboratory records to meet federal and state regulations, CAP, and The Joint Commission standards. Provide all statistical information as necessary.
  • Oversees the Microbiology Section equipment, middleware computer operations, upgrades, and maintenance. Keeps training records of personnel.
  • Checks the validity and accuracy of test results obtained by the laboratory personnel. Implement and supervise required quality control and quality assurance programs.
  • Orders and maintains inventory levels of all supplies. Oversees ordering, shipping and invoices from all vendors.
  • Ensures that all equipment functions according to laboratory standards. In collaboration with the Medical Director, maintains a five year capital replacement plan and recommends equipment replacement and participates in its evaluation.
  • Provides direct technical assistance or support, reviewing and performing complex or special test procedures as necessary. Investigate complex analytical problems.
  • Implements new technical programs and tests, ensuring that laboratory staff is appropriately trained. Evaluates and revises laboratory procedures.
  • Develops protocols for carrying out evaluation of candidate test methods, instruments, and quality control materials and procedures, and directs the evaluations, including the recording of data and maintenance of records to document performance.
  • Keeps current with new technology through literature review and attendance at local and national conferences.
  • Oversees the Microbiology Section. Maintains a competency testing program and training program for all technologists. Is responsible for scheduling of procedures, all processing records, providing personnel for off-hour procedures.
  • Is responsible for ensuring proper communication of reportable infectious diseases to appropriate public health authorities.
  • Is responsible for creating, implementing and revising safety procedures. The Manager ensures that all employees and visitors to the section adhere to safety policies and procedures.
  • Works with the Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine to oversee billing issues, implementation and updating of CPT, APC, HCPCS codes and pricing guides.
  • Ensures compliance with mandatory continuing education requirements and department continuing education goals.
  • Collaborates with physicians, medical students, nurses, managers and employees within the hospital to provide cost high quality, safe and effective services.
  • Maintains professional relationships with vendors consistent with the Tufts Medical Center Corporate Compliance policies.
  • Provides training for residents, fellows, interns and medical technology students.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed

Scope of Duties

  • Responsible for the day to day technical and administrative management of the Microbiology Section of the laboratory providing coverage 7 days per week, 24 hours per day.
  • Manages approximately 24 medical technologists.
Job Qualifications:

III. JOB REQUIREMENTS:

A. JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Laboratory techniques
  • Strong clinical microbiology background including instrument troubleshooting.
  • Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet and laboratory information systems knowledge
  • Strong organizational and prioritizing skills
  • Leadership and teambuilding skills
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to supervise a large staff of employees
  • Troubleshooting, intradepartmental communication and teaching ability

B. EDUCATION

  • Level of knowledge typically acquired through a Bachelors degree in Medical Technology plus a year internship in clinical laboratories. Masters Degree in Medical Technology, Healthcare or Business Administration strongly preferred

EXPERIENCE

  • A total of 5 years experience minimum of 4 years experience in a CAP accredited laboratory and at least 3-years supervisory experience.

C. LICENSES, ETC.:

  • Requires a Medical Technologist Certification:
  • MT (ASCP) - American Society of Clinical Pathologists

V. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Normal office work environment
  • Typical clinical laboratory or research wet laboratory work environment
  • Working with, infectious bodily substances including blood and employing universal precautions.
  • Work requires frequent computer keying, some operation of laboratory equipment, cleaning equipment, etc.
  • In emergency situations normal work hours do not apply.
