Medical Director of Addiction Psychiatry Treatment Program (APTP)

SUMMARY: The position involves outpatient care of individuals with substance use disorders, including working to support patient engagement with medication for substance use disorders within a nurse care manager model. As an academic institution at Boston Medical Center, active engagement in research and education is encouraged with new resources available for program development and scholarly pursuits. Faculty appointment will be commensurate with experience. Education/supervision opportunities are abundant with students, residents, and addiction fellows. The APTP Medical Director will provide leadership, with the goal of providing direct patient care and supervising holistic addiction treatment in outpatient settings. The APTP Medical Director, working closely with theAPTP Clinical Supervisor, and the Director of Psychological Services for Addiction Psychiatry to lead an interdisciplinary team offering evidenced-based biologic and psychosocial treatments in a patient-focused, highly professional, and compassionate environment.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Leadership

Planning, implementing, directing and evaluating the clinical services of the ambulatory practice for APTP consistent with the goals of BMC, BUMG and the department/section. Oversees the work of physicians, advanced practice professionals (APP) and staff working within APTP, to continuously improve the performance in the six quality domains of safety, timeliness (access), equity, efficiency, effectiveness and patient-centered care. Builds cooperative partnerships with internal and external practices, referral sources and community health centers. Works with the Outpatient Psychiatry leadership team to measurably improve patient experience. Works to improve the efficiency and satisfaction of clinicians, staff and administrative team members in the practice, by partnering with the leadership of BMC, BUMG and the Department. Participates in cross-ambulatory activities and initiatives to improve clinical services and operations and to support overall goals of BMC and BUMG. (e.g., quality of care, patient readmissions, health equity, etc). Examples:

  • With collaboration with APTP Clinical Program Supervisor, reviews referrals and consults, for appropriate triage to clinical providers within APTP
  • Collaborations and close communication with other subspecialty clinics at BMC, and provides oversight for coordination of care.

Participates regularly in appropriate administrative meetings including, but not limited to:

  • Department or Section staff meetings.
  • Weekly APTP operations meetings with administrative leadership and practice staff.

Participates in professional development programs offered by BMC, BUMG, BUSM, and other entities (e.g. AAMC). Models professionalism and adherence to professional and regulatory standards. Ensures that students, residents, and fellows are integrated in the ambulatory practice and supervised in a manner consistent with the policies of the ACGME, Department/Section, BUSM, and BMC in conjunction with educational leadership.

Program Operations

Leads or provides input at regular meetings with physicians and APPs related to ambulatory practice operations. Maintains oversight of physician and APP schedules (e.g., appointment templates, away time), and oversight of clinical productivity Participates in the recruitment and selection process for physicians and APPs. Provides an oversight structure for clinical practice of advanced practice professionals. Participates in the yearly performance appraisal of key leaders (e.g., AD, practice manager, team coordinators). Participates in hiring decisions, includingnursing, support staff and the administrative team. Addresses physician and APP performance and adherence to standards in conjunction with the Program Manager/Coordinator/Director. Participates in the onboarding of new physicians and APPs. Formulates and implements medical practice policies and procedures, in collaboration with clinical leadership of Psychiatry and Outpatient Psychiatry, with support from the APTP Clinical Program Supervisor. Performs periodic review of practice management functions in collaboration with the Chair/Chief (or designee) and administrative leaders. Maintains familiarity and competency with relevant IT systems. Ensures adherence to medical record documentation and billing requirements, reviewing data and audits in collaboration with the Chair/Chief.

Financial Management and Business Development

Participates in and/or leads planning for the addiction psychiatry program development and identifies opportunities for growth. Works with leadership team to monitor practice growth andstaffing needs and develops business plans to justify added or modified staffing or resources.

Direct Clinical Care

Provide direct clinical care to patients with co-occurring disorders in outpatient behavioral health (at least 0.6 FTE, or 6 clinical sessions)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Medical Degree
  • Board certification in Psychiatry with added qualifications in Addiction Psychiatry or Addiction Medicine (ABPN or ABAM board certified or eligible).
  • Hold current, or able to obtain, Massachusetts medical license, current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration
  • Minimum of three years clinical experience beyond residency/fellowship training
  • Prior supervisory and teaching experience preferred.
