The is one of the world's leading biomedical research institutes. It is dedicated to using the power of genomics to transform our understanding and treatment of disease. The Broad Institute's Office of Academic Affairs seeks an energetic, proactive, and detail-oriented Academic Program Specialist to join our fast-paced team.

The Academic Program Specialist will serve two key functions: 1) securing funding and recognition for Broad researchers by writing scientifically detailed prize nominations, and 2) providing writing support and program management for research integrity initiatives and other cross-functional projects with institute-wide importance. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to lead and support science communication programming in the Broad Research Communication Lab (Comm Lab), including workshops, seminar series, and research integrity programming. Through this work, the Academic Program Specialist will engage with a large cross-section of the Broad community, including leadership, administrators, and scientific researchers at all levels.

Responsibilities will include:

Scientific writing

  • Write and disseminate scientifically detailed prize nominations and other scientific communications, including but not limited to letters and summaries of research programs

  • Proactively collect, summarize, and update key information on the research programs of Broad scientists

  • Identify relevant prize opportunities for Broad faculty and trainees based on an understanding of their research programs

  • Maintain an up-to-date database of requirements for individual prizes and awards, including funding amounts, deadlines, eligibility restrictions and required materials for nominations

  • Research new prizes and limited-submission funding opportunities

  • Track and report metrics for prizes and limited-submission funding programs

Research Integrity Program Support

  • Draft reports, memos, and other written communications for research misconduct cases, including documents requiring explanation of scientific concepts, protocols, technologies, etc.

  • Management of Broad's Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) program, including but not limited to identifying topics to address, working with content experts to develop and execute modules, and facilitating sessions

  • With leadership, develop, implement, and maintain research integrity programming and educational outreach

  • Develop and manage a research integrity toolbox, including but not limited to researching and drafting best practice guidelines for a range of topics, identifying new software and other tools, and managing a resource website

Broad Research Communication Lab

  • Support planning and execution of Comm Lab initiatives, including seminar series and workshops on peer review, manuscript and grant writing, and other topics

Requirements:

  • A Master's degree in a biomedical field or science journalism with 3+ years of equivalent experience, or PhD in a biomedical field with at least 1+ years of equivalent experience

  • Exceptional proficiency in navigating the biomedical research literature, including the ability to discern the most important new advances and describe how they impact particular subfields and biomedicine broadly

  • Excellent writing skills, including scientific writing for both expert and non-expert audiences

  • Experience in project management or coordination in an academic and/or research environment

  • Excellent oral communication skills

  • Strong organizational, time- and data-management skills

  • Highly detail oriented

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team

  • Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize among them based on risk, importance, urgency, and potential implications

  • Exceptional proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google business apps (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets)

  • Onsite requirement of 2 days per week with the expectation that more days might be required

Preferred:

  • Experience publishing review articles and primary research articles in a biomedical field

  • Experience with metrics analysis and reporting
