Smith+Nephew's Arthroscopic Enabling Technologies division is working on the development of the next generation of medical devices to enable surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery. As we grow, we are seeking a Staff FPGA Engineer, who will be a contributor to the development of medical device hardware, encompassing digital image acquisition and processing, computer vision, and video streaming. This is an exciting career opportunity for a high potential engineer interested in the advancing their career through the design and development of sophisticated, high-speed digital electronics for medical applications.

What will you be doing?

  • Design, prototype, and develop digital electronics design within medical products:

    • Perform tasks related to RTL design and coding, simulation, modeling, testbench verification, IP block integration etc.

    • Assist with components selection based on given requirements.

    • Read and analyze schematics.

    • Collaborate with PCBA designers to support FPGA connectivity and functionality.

    • Test, debug, and bring-up of prototype circuit boards

    • Assist in the development of test protocols and fixtures.

  • Document results of testing and failure analysis

  • Provide technical support to other groups as required to bring a product successfully through commercialization. Help maintain existing products and support Smith+Nephew vendor technical questions.

  • Perform design control functions to ensure compliance with FDA, ISO, and other regulatory bodies.

  • Participate in ownership of Design History Files, writing specifications and test documents (protocols/report) as needed.

  • Conduct technical design reviews as needed.

  • Lead/Mentor Junior engineers as required

What will you need to be successful?

  • Education:

    • Minimum BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering

  • Experience:

    • 5+ years of experience in digital logic design such as FPGA, CPLD, and Gate logic design, leveraging good analytical and problem-solving skills.

    • 5+ years of experience in Hardware Descriptive Languages (Verilog or System Verilog preferred).

    • 5+ years of experience with FPGA and CPLD development and simulation tools such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, working in tight collaboration with PCBA designers.

    • 1+ years of Mentorship/Leadership experience

    • Experience with design controls, preferably in the medical device industry.

    • Experience working in a cross-functional team of electrical, software, systems, and mechanical engineers

    • Experience in a work environment with rapid growth and quick scope changes is desired.

    • Experience with Analog circuits and microcontroller hardware and software is preferred

  • Travel Requirements: Less than 10%
