The Jacobsen lab uses rare genetic bone disorders as a model to understand bone growth and development. We use mouse models, human derived pluripotent stem cells and human genetics. Our goal is to development new therapies for pediatric bone disease, especially pediatric osteoporosis and disorders of bone formation. Current therapies for these disorders are limited and only used once patients start to fracture. We hope to be able to better identify which patients are at risk prior to fracture and to develop innovative new therapies through our preclinical translational research.

This Research Assistant II will be responsible for:

  • According to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules, performing a variety of routine laboratory tests and procedures, utilizing standard laboratory equipment, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy. Our standard lab techniques include cell culture, PCR/QPCR, mouse husbandry, bulk and single cell RNAseq and standard and electron microscopy.
  • Troubleshooting procedures for effects of heat, humidity, and contamination if test results are unexpected or quality of specimens is poor. Suggesting alternative routine procedures to crosscheck own findings.
  • Assisting with planning specific research procedures, coordinating schedules of tests and procedures. Developing and troubleshooting new techniques.
  • Maintaining records of results and methodologies into a log of work performed. Compiling and analyzing data, preparing charts, graphs, and results of studies.
  • Once proficient in our laboratory, demonstrating basic laboratory techniques to laboratory assistants and technicians, research fellows, residents and students.
  • Contributing to the team within and between departments and organizations.

To qualify, you must have:

  • The knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts acquired through completion of a Bachelor's or Master's Degree.
  • At least two years' experience in a research lab setting (not required if applicant has a Master's Degree).
  • The analytical skills to resolve complex problems requiring the use of scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and research experienced-based knowledge.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Work requires strong quantitative skills.
  • Experience with cell culture strongly desired.
  • Experience and/or coursework in computer programming strongly desired but not required.
